In fast jeder Pflanze kommen ätherische Öle auf ganz natürlichem Wege vor. Durch pflanzliche Extraktion können diese Stoffe aus Pflanzen gelöst werden, um daraus ätherische Öle zu gewinnen. Werden diese ätherischen Öle bei richtiger Dosierung und Temperatur verdampft, sind sie unschädlich und haben nahezu keine Nebenwirkungen.
Aromatherapie findet als natürliche Alternative zu herkömmlicher Medizin Anwendung. So hilft beispielsweise Asthmatikern das Verdampfen der ätherischen Öle von Thymian oder Eukalyptus.
Eine Vielzahl von Pflanzen können mit ihren Ölen unterschiedlichste Symptome hemmen und verhindern.
Das Vaporisieren der ätherischen Öle von Bergamotte und Basilikum eignet sich z.B. vor allem in angespannten und stressigen Zeiten. Beide wirken antibakteriell und besitzen eine aufmunternde, stimmungsaufhellende Wirkung und sollen sogar bei Fieber helfen.

Wer jetzt denkt, dass ätherische Öle erst seit dem 20. Jahrhundert verdampft werden, liegt weit daneben.
Schon die alten Ägypter, Griechen und auch Römer fanden Verwendung für ätherische Öle. Sie konstruierten Destillationsapparate zum Lösen der ätherischen Öle. Diese wurden auf glühende Steine geträufelt, um Thermen und andere Räumlichkeiten in einen aromatischen, wohltuenden und bekömmlichen Dampf zu hüllen.
